Difference Between Xanax and Zoloft

Xanax vs Zoloft

Depression is most often evident in a percentage of the population. Though it cannot be prevented, we humans can always consider a problem as a big deal or not. It’s up to us whether we’ll take it seriously or not. Some problems, however, are too traumatic to an individual such as heartaches, failures, and so on and so forth.

At these times, for those who are chronically depressed for months without a change in their condition, they are always referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist for medical intervention. These physicians who specialize in emotional abnormalities may help them at these difficult times.

Two of the most common medications being prescribed are Xanax and Zoloft. Let us try to discriminate between these two drugs.

Alprazolam is the generic name of Xanax. Sertraline is the generic name of Zoloft. Xanax is categorized under benzodiazepines while Zoloft is categorized under SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Xanax and Zoloft work the same in inhibiting depression by the production of the happy hormone which is serotonin and allaying anxiety.

Xanax is generally used in anxiety disorders such as panic attacks and depression. This drug may cause birth defects so it is advised to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Alcohol is also prohibited when taking this drug because it is a benzodiazepine. Zoloft, on the other hand, is generally prescribed for depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder.

One is advised not to take these drugs if one is allergic to medications. If you are taking Zoloft, you should not take MAOI drugs as this may cause an adverse drug-drug interaction. When under Xanax, one should avoid operating heavy machinery and driving cars as this causes mild drowsiness. Liver and kidney problems must be assessed also when taking Zoloft.

Summary:

1. Alprazolam is the generic name of Xanax. Sertraline is the generic name of Zoloft.
2. Xanax is categorized under benzodiazepines while Zoloft is categorized under SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
3. Xanax and Zoloft work the same in inhibiting depression by the production of the happy hormone which is serotonin and allaying anxiety.
4. Xanax is generally indicated for anxiety disorders such as panic attacks while Zoloft is widely used for depression.

  1. My doctor said zanax is only used when flying…and it’s a deadly drug cause Keith leager n Prince are dead .l don’t have there doctors either

    • Xanax is a very addictive drug. Careful consideration should be taken before opting for this drug. Zoloft is not as addictive, therefore may be the right choice. Your doctor can advise and educate you on these drugs. Be safe and careful….

      • I’ve been taking zanax “buying it in the street 2ml bar “! I know it’s addictive & I’m scared but I’m also scared of zoloft which has caused people to do horrible / horrific things to others. I was perscribed a medication that was weening me off of zanax for 30 days. When the month was up the Dr prescribed me a medication that just Knocked Me Out & when I woke up I was Sluggish & felt like Shit. I should have been given the same prescription for 30 more days as promised / discussed with my DR. #backtothesame

    • Lol. Good strategy.

  2. Hi, My dad has Alzheimer’s and we care for him at home. He has issues sleeping and come late afternoon to early evening starts with wanting to go home. He wanders almost the entire night. He is on Zoloft and we are thinking about asking the DR about Xanax as a friend said her mother-in-law did much better on it. I read its very additive but wonder if that is a big concern with a 84 year old Alzheimer patient. Could you please advise me? Thanks so much!

  3. I have Bipolar disorder 1, PTSD, PMDD and some less serious stuff. I am on strong meds since 2010.
I am taking Xanax for many years for my anxiety.
Is very addictive but also the best.
But I need something for PMDD.
I used to take Sarafem( I was really happy without any symptoms a week before my period)and is not the same as fluoxetine I have to take now bc I don’t afford to buy Sarafem.
You have no idea how much I suffer not having anything to balance my PMDD.
Bc of that, my relationship with my kid is bad, she hates me and she is scared of me. I have to take double dose of Xanax . I don’t wish even my enemies to get PMDD, I am not myself at least 7-10 days before period. Is a nightmare !
I gonna ask my doctor for something or I I might do mistake of my life and ruin completely.

  4. Whats the difference between zanax and zoloft??

    • Xanax has been prescribed to me for anxiety and it works like magic for me , I don’t have depression but I moved and got a new Doctor who refused to prescribe me Xanax and gave me Zoloft instead … I had a horrible reaction including explosive diaharrea and it didn’t do anything beneficial for me … I suffer from anxiety and insomnia but not depression or PTSD …my new Doctor refuses to prescribe me what works for me and gives me total relief …the doctor said that she will not risk losing her license by prescribing me Xanax because of the opioid epidemic in America …it is my personal opinion that she knows nothing about what the Hippocratic Oath is or what it means or how she should treat her patients she’s only interested in cashing in on insurance money by seeing me and prescribing me something that does not work for me and even though I do know what works for me and has work for me for quite some time and I’ve never had any issues or problems behind taking Xanax she does not care if I feel good or if I feel bad if I get relief or if I am in terrible distress from having explosive diarrhea and no Relief by The Zoloft that she prescribed me that just made me feel sick and didn’t give me any good benefits I really think that it’s disgusting that she just wants to make money and doesn’t care about her patients and she scared because of the Xanax being an opioid and the crisis is going on in America the whole thing is disgusting to me and she’s a nasty woman who has a horrible bedside manner she shouldn’t be a doctor she should be working at a carwash

      • I feel like when you go to a Dr and request medications that you know works for you they red flag you as a drug addict! It really pisses me off that because of street junkies looking for a fix, then the ones of us that do need it can’t cant get it. If Drs aren’t willing to prescribe it the they should stop making it all together! I was prescribed Xanax years ago and take it only for panic attacks and when I’m going to be around a lot of people. I have no problem with addiction so that’s why my Dr gives them to me I don’t take them on a daily basis but when I have a panic attack that is the only drug that works for me! Just keep looking for a Dr that listens to you! After all you know your body better then anyone and you know what medications work the best for you!

        • “Street junkies”, as you so kindly referred to US as, started out taking these meds because they were prescribed to us by a fucking doctor and they just kept giving us more and upping the amount because our brains build up a rolerance. After being PRESCRIBED these pills for a long time, we got addicted. NOT OUR FAULT!! Then, all the sudden, the government decided we shouldn’t have been given all these pills and they took them away. Again,NOT OUR FAULT!! What would you, being so perfect and all, advise us to do now? You should really educate yourself before posting your ignorant opinion for the world to see. It’s a sickness that was started by the doctors and maybe they don’t want the same thing to happen to you?? God forbid you turn into a street junkie. Things that make you go hmmm…..

        • So True. An that’s sad. Like they say… D good suffer from da bad. Soooooooooo Wrong. Good luck Ma’am.

      • If I was honey I would get another Dr and explain to them what’s going on because that’s wrong you not like everyone that’s addicted Yea she only after that check period

      • I think she just doesn’t want to prescribe it because Xanax is a benzodiazepine, which are one of the most addictive class of drugs. If you suddenly stop taking Xanax or another drug in this class you can be at risk of seizures and other issues. You could ask her to try Klonopin if Xanax really works for you. You have a better chance of getting prescribed that and it works basically the same. I’m not sure why she told you it was an opiate because Xanax is not an opiate. Maybe she just didn’t want you to be addicted.

      • True story. Been there n done that. That’s d same thing my Doctor did. U r so Right. U can’t help me. Then I can’t help u 2get Rich off of Me n My Insurance Not going 2happen. So I call my insurance and told them ?s going on. An they send a Request Form Of My Medical Record’s 2My Doctor. 2C ? was going on. So now im getting the Medication’s that I need. They don’t like when u take matters n ur on . No they think We 2 STUPID.So I change doctor’s. Now I have d 2Best Doctor’s. That listen 2me n helping me with my Problems. So don’t give . Good luck Sir.

      • Some of these doctor’s opinions are wrong and even silly — such as those afraid to prescribe some meds. They should attempt to prescribe whatever works. Xanax is popular but it’s not very effective. It is also safe and not addictive, contrary to others’ comments. I decided I don’t want to take it any longer, because it doesn’t do much. Trazadone is far better — helps you sleep, enhances appetite. Another, older drug is meprobamate. It’s not prescribed as often now, but it should be. It has a soothing effect, and it is NOT addictive — I used to use it for years and addiction was never a problem. It’s a shame some of these drugs have gotten a bad reputation due to claims of “addiction” — I maintain you’d have to set out to get addicted. A case in point is Vicodin for pain. The main drawback is that it doesn’t always work. I’ve used it for some time, and it does NOT have any addictive properties or side effects. Those who say otherwise are either overly fearful or wrong.

  5. I was on Seroquel 15 mg at 8 12 and 5:30 and 300 mg at bedtime. It had me real sluggish in the morning when I woke up for about 8 hours so now I’m Zoloft does it work . my diagnosis is panic attacks PTSD severe depression and severe anxiety. So can anyone tell me the effects of Zoloft and does it work.

  6. My doctor is prescribing me Zoloft 25mg I have to go pick it up at the Pharmacy I have not taken it yet can anybody out there let me know how this medicine works for them I have a lot of anxiety Lately

    • The Zoloft are good helps me I’m taking 100 seroqule in morning with a Zoloft and 4 to 500 seroqule at night I still wakes up every two or 3 times a night

    • Anyone that has experienced the onset of a Panic disorder knows how terrifying it is….20 years ago & 6 months testing, it was Panic Disorder. Xanax was my savior. A few years later, Depression set in. Immipramine was prescribed & after 3 weeks, I experienced hallucinations. Very scary, so I was taken off and put on Zoloft. I haven’t had any bad reactions. I take the Xanax & Zoloft at bedtime. I am 75 yrs old…

  7. I was on Xanax for 5 years, panic attacks and anxiety, now the same Dr will not prescribe it. I was never addicted and never took more than .5 a day, you will not become addicted if taken as prescribed! People who abuse drugs have made a living hell for the rest of us!!! Drs please wake up and stop putting everyone in the same box!!!!!

  8. I took Zoloft for 15 years for anxiety. It worked great. Quit being effective, so Celexa was prescribed. That was worthless. I now take Xanaz at night to help sleep and be alert the next morning.
