Xanax vs Prozac
Psychiatric medications are one of the most popular in relieving the symptoms being experienced by almost all of the population, such as depression and anxiety. These two problems are always experienced by people who have diverse problems in life as well as stress brought about by the environment. This cannot be controlled, though, but can be managed by medications.
Xanax and Prozac are very popular in these categories in relieving the symptoms of anxiety and depression. These drugs help millions of people around the globe. Let us examine the differences.
Regarding problems of anxiety, Xanax is the DOC, or drug of choice, for it. In problems of depression, Prozac is widely prescribed for people having this type of illness.
Alprazolam is the generic name of Xanax while Fluoxetine is the generic name of Prozac. Xanax is a benzodiazepine while Prozac is an SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Prozac works by increasing the serotonin in our brain. Serotonin is said to make us happy. Benzodiazepine, on the other hand, works by stabilizing our mood and anxiety. Other indications of Prozac include: panic attack treatment, bulimia, anorexia, and OCD or obssesive-compulsive disorder.
Xanax is contraindicated for people with DM, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, glaucoma, and Parkinson’s disease. Both drugs are already contraindicated in those with a history of problems such as an allergy to it, seizures, suicidal ideations and attempts, kidney disorders, liver disorders, and bipolar disorders.
Both of these drugs should be taken in the right amount or dosage at the right time and right place. These should be taken exactly at the interval being prescribed by the physician such as twice a day, every 8 hours, and so on and so forth.
One should also remember than when taking anti-anxiety drugs such as Xanax, one should not try operating heavy machinery. One should also not drive as these drugs may cause drowsiness or sleepiness. In anti-depressants, one should also remember that the effects of these drugs will take weeks before they will take their fullest effects.
