Difference Between LPN and CNA

nurseLPN vs CNA

LPN refers to Licensed Practical Nurse and CNA refers to Certified Nursing Assistants, or Aides. Many students who are studying to be nurses, may find the difference between these two terms a bit confusing. Well, the definitions themselves indicate many differences. LPNs are licensed nurses, whereas CNAs are only certified nurses.

One of the major differences between a LPN and a CNA, is the mode of their services. Licensed Practical Nurses have more duties to perform than Certified Nursing Assistants.

A Certified Nursing Assistant usually takes care of the basic needs of a patient. Their basic responsibilities include serving food, bathing, dressing, tidying up beds and taking temperatures. A Licensed Practical Nurse administers medications, dresses wounds, takes pressure, monitors catheters, and fills out medical charts.

A LPN can perform the duties of a CNA. On the other hand, a CNA cannot perform the duties of a LPN. Well, LPNs have more direct contact with patients than CNAs.

There is also a difference in education between a LPA and a CNA. A person who wants to become a Licensed Practical Nurse will have to undergo a one-year learning process, that involves both theory and clinical practice. On the other hand, a person can become a CNA after only a few weeks of lessons. They have to just learn personal care skills, and nothing as complicated as a person who pursues a LPN exam.
In order to get a nursing license, a LPN has to pass a state licensing examination. On the other hand, a person qualifies for a CNA certification once he/she has completed the training.

Another difference that can be seen between a Licensed Practical Nurse and a Certified Nursing Assistant, is their salary. A LPN gets a better salary than a CNA.

Summary:

1. LPNs are licensed nurses, whereas the CNAs are only certified nurses.

  1. Cna’s have more direct contact with the residents than the nurses do. after all the nurses just like to hurry up and pass out medicine so they can sit back down

  2. It is true, CNA’s have more patient contact. Some nurses are just not motivated and this is why they hurry up and pass meds and sit back down…

  3. Very nice style and design and excellent subject material , very little else we need : D.

  4. Um… I am studying to be a CNA and it is more than a few classes and lessons. It is a full year class and we have classroom and clinical hours that we are required to meet. LPN’s do have more tasks they CNA’s do, but CNA’s are the eyes and ears of the nurses and they do A LOT of the work with the patients, thank you. And CNA’s learn more than just personal care and feeding. We also have to take a test at the end of our class and pass it to be certified, and its a STATE test too. So why don’t you get your information (and maybe your spelling) right before you publish something. Thanks.

  6. As a CNA you have more contact with the patients/clients than the Nurses. We also can administer medications. We are always looked upon as being at the bottom but, our classes consist of hands-on training and clinical. If you ask me, I think CNA’s are underpaid while doing the majority of the work.

  7. As a Cna, you have more contact with the patient/client. We also can administer medications and take vitals. In our classes, we have hands-on training and clinical. Cna’s always frowned upon and underpaid while we do the majority of the work.

  8. I’ve been a Certified Nursing Assistant for 18 yrs. And just let me say this, it had to be someone that even isn’t in the medical field that wrote that.A CNA does far more than any nurse that I have every known and cna’s never get any kind of credit we are the back bone of nursing, if it wasn’t for us people would not get took care of we are quite about it and the lpn and RN take the credit for it all but in the end God knows,
We are the Real caregivers! Quot un qout

    • And let me just add this to, during the covid-19 we as CNA’S are very hurt we are not mentioned at all and we as cnas have to work more closely with patients and residents than anyone out there it’s so sad that know one even mention us. It’s really sad because I’ve heard so many say we are not even mention, people in the world don’t even know about cnas and what they do and how much they do : (
