Difference Between Plasma and Projection TVs

samsung_hdtvPlasma vs Projection TVs

Plasma Display is a flat-panel television which employs a similar technology with the old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) television. The television images are produced when different areas of different colors of phosphor are lightened up. However, instead of using a heavy picture tube, plasma display uses a very hot gas called plasma to light up the phosphors.

The basic concept of Plasma Display is to illuminate tiny, colored pixels from fluorescent bulbs to form an image. Each pixel is lit individually. Every pixel is made up of three separate sub-pixels, each with different colored phosphors. When they are ignited, the phosphors create millions of tiny dots called pixels. These pixels contain colors called RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) that when combined forms an image which can be seen on the TV screen.

The Plasma Display contains very thin materials, allowing them to become thinner and wider, which is the trend for TV’s nowadays.

On the other hand, Projection TV’s have extremely large screens. Projection TV’s create a small picture, and then use a beam of light to display the picture at a much larger size. There are two types of projection systems. One is called the front-projection display system, and the other is called a rear-projection display system.

In front-projection display systems, there are projectors, that are used apart from the screen. The light picks up the picture, then projects it to the screen. The projector reflects or projects the images at the front of the screen. The images can then be made larger or smaller. This is the usual set-up you see in movie theaters. With the rear-projection display system, the images are projected at the back of the screen rather than at the front. It is called reflective, which means that the light picks up the picture and displays it to the screen by bouncing it off the device.

The rear-projection TV can be very big and bulky, consuming a lot of space, while front-projection TV can be mounted on the wall or ceiling. You would also need a dark room with a flat, clean wall, on which the screen can be displayed. Plasma Displays are less space consuming and provide a much higher image quality. They are not as large as the Projection TV’s, but are still much more expensive.

Summary:

1. Plasma TV’s use plasma gas to light up phosphors and display images, while Projection TV’s use beams of light to display images on the screen.

2. Projection TV’s have much larger screens because they can be projected to your contented size. Plasma TV’s can be wide enough, but not as large as Projection TV’s.

3. Front-projection TV’s need a dark room or flat wall, and rear-projection TV’s are big and space consuming. Plasma TV’s are smaller, and can be hung on the wall, saving more space.

4. Plasma TV’s are more expensive than Projection TV’s because they produce a much better image quality, that can match some of the CRT’s best quality sets.
