Difference Between Nose and Tail of a Skateboard

Nose vs Tail of a Skateboard

The tail and nose of a skateboard may look almost the same. For some skateboards, where the nose and tail have the same angle, you can skate either way. But there are other skateboards with different angles of the nose and tail that can make a difference.

For many skateboards, the nose and tail have different shapes or concaves. Most skateboards have a nose with a special bright colored hardware on it so that skaters can easily distinguish it from the tail.

For old school skateboards, the nose is flat and round and the tail is curved upward. Although skateboards that are being sold nowadays have the same ends so sometimes it could be meaningless to differentiate the nose from the tail.

If the end of the skateboard is smaller, then it is the tail, and the larger part is the nose. Another term for the nose is “catch” because it actually catches your foot when you do an Ollie. So the nose should be larger to better catch your foot. The tail of the skateboard is smaller and is slightly closer to the ground to have a better pop and faster response. It’s actually harder to skate when you use the larger end of the skateboard as a tail.

For some skateboards, the tail is steeper, longer, and wider while the nose is sharper and narrower. But you can make more tricks when the nose of the skateboard is wider and bigger.

The nose and tails of skateboards can be protected. The nose is protected by placing a nose guard made of a plastic bumper that protects the front of a skateboard. It is usually used for old school skateboards. While the tail can be covered with a tail guard that is a plastic cover that protects the tail.

For skateboards with the same tail and nose, you can skate by switching them. But if you skate forward with one end only, then it could easily wear it down when you do trucks, deck, and brushings. What’s good about this idea is it will be more comfortable to skate and do different tricks although it would be difficult to break and skate when your skateboard is worn down on one end. So it is better to switch both ends of the skateboard so that it would wear evenly.

Summary:

1.The tail and nose on skateboards look exactly the same but usually it differs in angles to differentiate them.
2.The nose has a special bright colored hardware to distinguish it from the tail.
3.For old school skateboards, the nose is flat and round while the tail is curved upward.
4.For some skateboards, the tail is smaller and the nose is larger. But noses should be larger to better catch your foot.
5.Tails of skateboards are smaller than the nose, and it is pretty much closer to the ground that causes it to wear faster.
6.The nose can be protected with a nose guard while the tail is covered with a tail guard to prevent them from wearing.
7.For skateboards with the same nose and tail, it is better to switch using them so that each end would wear equally.
