Difference Between Fiber Cement and Vinyl Siding

fiber-cement-pdFiber Cement vs Vinyl Siding

When constructing a new home, or when remodeling or renovating an old home, the question of siding is raised. Various types of sidings are available, and the most sought after are the fiber cement and vinyl siding. Here, let’s see some of the differences between fiber cement and vinyl siding.

When choosing siding, durability is an aspect that everyone looks for. A siding made of fiber cement is more durable than sidings made from vinyl. The fiber cement siding comes with inter-laminated bond strength, which makes it a great choice for cold climates.

But when comparing cost, the fiber cement siding’s cost is a bit higher than that of the vinyl siding. As an affordable alternative to other sidings, vinyl siding is cheap, as the manufacturing cost is low. Another thing is that vinyl siding is also environmentally friendly, as it can be recycled. On the other hand, fiber cement sidings do not come with such a feature.

Another quality of fiber cement siding is that it gives a texture of brick façade or real wood. On the other hand, vinyl siding comes in penetrating colors. An advantage of vinyl siding is that there is no need to scrap or paint it, like other materials; just a wash is needed.

Vinyl siding is composed of Poly Vinyl Chloride resins, which are combined with other elements. Acrylic components are used when making vinyl siding to make it resistant to denting and extreme weather conditions. Moreover, Titanium Dioxide, and some other chemicals, are added to vinyl to protect its color from fading.

Fiber cement siding is a combination of cement, sand and cellulose.

  1. Are you knowledgeable about the class action lawsuits against James Hardie Co. and Certain Teed involving their fiber cement siding products? Certain Teed has agreed to a settlement of $103 million dollars as of August 2014.

The suit against James Hardie is very similar to the one against Certain Teed. Both companies are alleged to have mislead the public about the properties of fiber cement siding products, which the federal court found in Certain Teed’s case to defective.
