Difference Between Poblano and Jalapeno
Poblano vs Jalapeno
Poblanos and jalapenos are two different chili varieties of Mexico. They have different tastes and appearances. They grow and originate in different parts of Mexico and are used as different ingredients for different dishes.
Poblano
Poblanos are the most common and favorite chilies of Mexico. They originated from the Puebla State of Mexico. The word “poblano” means “an inhabitant of Puebla” thus the name given to it. The plant of the poblano is multi-stemmed and reaches the height of about 25 inches. Its appearance is wide and thus it is called the “chile ancho” or “wide chile.” The ripe poblano is very dark red in color almost resembling black, but the immature chili is purplish green. The fruits reach the length and width of almost two to three inches. The plant requires full sunlight. The ripened poblano has more flavor and it is much hotter than the green unripened poblano. In general, as compared to other chili peppers, they have a milder flavor. But sometimes the same plant may produce poblanos of different heat ranges which are very unpredictable in their heat content.
Some of the most common dishes prepared using poblanos are “chiles en nogada” which is usually made during festivals of Mexican Independence and “chile relleno” which is considered the most symbolic Mexican dish. Keeping them in airtight containers can preserve them for months; dried poblanos are crushed and ground to make powder also.
Jalapeno
Jalapenos are also very common and favorite chilis of Mexico. They originated from Xalapa in Veracruz. They grow mostly in the river basin of Papaloapan which is located in the north of Veracruz and also in areas of Delicias, Chihuahua. They are also grown now in Chiapas, Nayarit, Jalisco, Sonora, etc. Jalapenos are also named “chile gordo” in Mexico. They are of a medium size. The fruit grows to a length of two to three and one-half inches. They are usually eaten while still green but sometimes allowed to ripen and turn red. The red is not very dark but crimson. The plant grows to a height of almost two to four feet.
Jalapenos are eaten whole or sliced. Jelly is made of them, and they are served in many different ways like roasted, stuffed, smoked, used in drinks, sautéed, etc.
