Difference Between Hot Chocolate and Hot Cocoa
Hot Chocolate vs Hot Cocoa
Hot chocolate and hot cocoa are different drinks that are widely preferred by people around the globe. In many countries, the terms ‘hot chocolate’ and ‘hot cocoa’ are used differently to label two different drinks. But in the US, the two terms mean only the same thing, and there is hardly a difference cited between the two.
Hot cocoa is prepared from cocoa powder. Adding cocoa powder in warm milk or water makes the hot cocoa drink. In case the cocoa powder is not sweetened, sugar can be added to it. Cocoa powder is gotten from pressed chocolate. When making cocoa powder, the fat, which is also called cocoa butter, is removed from it but the chocolate taste remains.
Hot chocolate is made from melted chocolate which comes in the form of a bar, morsel, or chips. Adding melted chocolate in warm milk makes the hot chocolate drink. The melted chocolate comes in milk, sweet, and semi-sweet flavors. This chocolate, which is also known as bakers chocolate, is not eaten like a milk chocolate bar.
It can be seen that hot chocolate was developed many centuries before hot cocoa. It is said that the Olmecs of Central America developed hot chocolate.
When comparing the two, hot chocolate comes with a high fat/sugar content and comes in low cocoa content. This means that hot cocoa is better for the health as it comes with a low sugar and fat content. Hot cocoa also is a potent antioxidant beverage when compared to hot chocolate.
