Difference Between Enchiladas and Burritos

Enchiladas vs Burritos

Enchiladas and burritos are Mexican foods. In appearance, both enchiladas and burritos
look alike, but they are different in the contents, taste, and flavour.

One of the main differences between enchiladas and burritos is in the type of tortilla used. While corn is used for making enchiladas, wheat flour is used for making burritos.

The corn is filled with beef, cheese, chicken, and other things which go into the making of enchiladas. In this Mexican food, sauce is also used. Generally red sauce is used for beef, and cream or green sauce for cheese or chicken. The corn is either rolled or stacked and then baked. Meat, potatoes, chicken, beans, cheese, seafood, and vegetables are normally used for filling enchiladas.

In burritos, the wheat flour is generally folded or wrapped around a filling. The tortilla is generally steamed or lightly grilled so that it gets softened and is more pliable. The fillings can be different from region to region. In the Mexican style, refried beans, meat, or Mexican rice is used for the filling. But in the US, Mexican rice, lettuce, beans, meat, salsa, sour cream, avocado, and cheese are the ingredients used as fillers.

When comparing the size, burritos are considerably larger than enchiladas. Some burritos are very small about 2.5 inches in diameter, and some others are huge with 4 to 5 inches in diameter. On the contrary, enchiladas are thinner, about 1.5 inches in diameter.

With enchiladas, they are layered with toppings after the filling and are soaked in sauce. With burritos, the fillers are filled and then folded.

Unlike enchiladas, burritos are eaten without any utensils. On the other hand, forks and knives are needed for eating enchiladas.

  1. The references to ‘wheat’ and ‘corn’ should be expanded to clarify that these are the wheat tortillas or corn tortillas used to wrap the fillings.
