Difference Between Brie and Camembert
Brie VS Camembert
Brie and Camembert, which has originated in France, are known to be the best among cheese. Though these white cheeses come with certain similarities, there are many difference between the two.
First of all, one can find difference with regard to the location where the two are made. While Camembert is made in Normandy, Brie cheese is made in the Ile de France region.
One of the major differences seen between Brie and Camembert is in their shape and size. The Brie cheese is broad and larger than the Camembert. When the Brie weighs three kilogram, Camembert comes in small size of 250 grams.
Another difference is with regard to the period that these two were developed. Camembert has probably been in the market since 1800s. On the other hand, the Brie has been in the market since eighth century.
Both Camembert and Brie are made in almost the same manner. But the only difference is in the use of wheels that is used. Camembert is molded in wheels with thickness of 1.5 inches, diameter 4.5 inches and about 250g in weight. On the contrary, Brie is made in wheels that are one to 1.5 inches thick, 9 to 15 inch diameter and about 500 grams to three-kilogram weight.
When Penicillium Camemberti is added to Camembert, bacterium Brevibacterium linens are used in Brie.
Camembert is known to age more quickly than Brie. Coming to the flavour, Camembert is a little stronger than that of Brie.
The name Brie is associated with the French province where it originated. On the other hand, there is much folklore associated with Camembert. One story says that one Marie Harel who made the cheese presented it to Napoleon. Napoleon who mistook the name of the town for the name of the cheese officially named it as Camembert.
