Difference Between Beer and Cider
Beer and cider are the most popular beverages in the world. Of the two drinks, beer is consumed more and is the older between the two beverages.
One of the major differences between the two is in their ingredients. While beer is made from malted barley, cider is produced from apple juice.
Cider, which is made from apple juice can be alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic. On the other hand, beer contains alcohol, but in a small percentage.
Beer is made by brewing and fermenting malted barley and is mostly flavoured with hops. On the other hand, cider that is alcoholic is produced from fermenting apple juice. This alcholic cider is commonly known as hard cider and the non-alcoholic one is called as apple cider.
When it comes to the flavour and variety, cider comes in dry and sweet varieties. Beer is also classified into two categories based on the temperature of brewing. If the brewing takes place in a low temperature, then it is called as lager and when brewed at high temperature it is called as ale.
When talking of the appearance, the ciders come in completely clear to cloudy with sediment ranges. Cider comes in light yellow, orange or brown colours. The difference of colour and clarity comes because of the filtering between pressing and fermentation.
The color of beer is determined by the color of the malt. One of the most common colors is pale amber color, which comes from the pale malts. The dark beer comes from a lager malt base or pale malt with a mix of dark malt. The very dark beers use patent malts. Caramel is also used for darkening beers.

In the UK all cider is alcoholic, to roughly the same extent as a normal beer, ie about 4% ABV or so. If it is not alcoholic its simply called apple juice.
