Differences Between GT and Cobra
GT vs Cobra
Mustangs are excellently engineered automobiles, and they come in many types. For now, let’s try to compare the GT and the Cobra.
‘Cobra’ is just a shortened name for the ‘Ford Mustang SVT Cobra’. SVT stands for Special Vehicle Team, an arm of the Ford car manufacturing company. SVT primarily develops high performance vehicles for the company, and the Cobra is just one of the many they manufacture. In 1980, it was introduced as a prototype, and it was repeatedly well received from the 90’s until the new millennium. The Cobra is made in limited numbers, and it is considered to be a version of the Ford Mustang with an esteemed high performance. A higher performance Cobra R variant was also produced, although only on rare occasions.
In 1993, the initial style features of the Cobra are more subdued compared to the GT. Nevertheless, performance-wise, it is very impressive, since it used Ford’s GT40 high-performance engine equipment. A race-oriented type of Cobra was also produced in the same year. It was named the Cobra R, and its features were more for racing purposes; it does not even have a stereo or air conditioning system.
The Ford GT, on the other hand, was also considered as one of the car manufacturing company’s ‘supercars’. The GT was built from 2003 until 2006. At first, it was merely a concept car, and it was designed primarily for the nearing Centennial year celebration of the company. It was Camilo Pardo, the ‘Living Legend’ studio head, who took major credit for the design of the GT. It is very apparent that the inspiration was from the old, but nonetheless impressive, GT40 racing cars of the 60’s. It is no wonder that the GT is normally mistaken for the old GT40.
Like the Cobra, the GT was also placed into the production line because of the positive reception on the auto show circuit. The GT, however, was only made in limited numbers, and it was in 2004 that the GT appeared in production. In general, the Cobra is more powerful and sportier than the GT. The 2008 Shelby GT500KR is the most powerful Mustang to date, and it is a Cobra. The latest GT is the 2006 model.
Summary:
1. The GT was actually built as a concept car in 2003, but it was also produced in 2004; while the Cobra was a 1980 prototype, and came into production in 1993.
2. The Cobra is more powerful and sportier than the GT.
3. The Cobra was developed by SVT, while the design of the GT is headed by Camilo Pardo, the studio head of ‘Living Legend’.
4. The most recent Cobra and GT models were the 2008 Shelby GT500KR and the 2006 respectively.

I thought this was supposed to be comparing a Mustang Cobra & a Mustang GT, NOT a Ford GT.
Also, the first Mustang Cobra came out in ’76 on the Mustang II & was actually called a Mustang Cobra II (even though there was no Mustang Cobra before that). It continued through the end of the Mustang II era in ’78 & the ’79-’81 “Fox” Mustang was also available as Mustang Cobra, then the name went away (until ’93) & the Mustang GT replaced it in ’82 (there was no Mustang GT from ’70-’81).
