Difference Between the CSI and the FBI

the CSI vs the FBI

The CSI and FBI are law enforcement bodies in the US. “CSI” is Crime Scene Investigation, and “FBI” is Federal Bureau of Investigation. While the Crime Scene Investigation agency works with local law enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation works with the federal government.
When looking at the two, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has a broader arena. The FBI is involved in the investigation of large cases that are federal in nature and that cannot be handled by the local investigating agencies. On the other hand, the Crime Scene Investigation is just involved in investigating the scene of the crime, and they have no major role in further investigations. The CSI is also known as the Forensic Science Service.

Crime Scene Investigation’s main task is to carry out complex scene investigations and collect crucial information. The CSI investigators are responsible for the initial evaluation of a scene. The evidence that the CSI personnel gather are handed over to the agency that probes the case. The CSI investigators may also be called into court to testify about their findings and the methods used for collecting the data at the scene.

Established as the Bureau of Investigation in 1908, the name was changed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935. The FBI, which is part of the Department of Justice, mainly deals with investigating criminal activities. Besides protecting and defending the nation against terrorist threats, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has the duty to enforce criminal laws of the US and provide criminal justice services to federal, state, and municipal governments. The Bureau also works with international governments.

When speaking about getting a job with the FBI or CSI, it is hard to get one in the former service. One should have at least five years’ service as a police officer, or as military personnel, or have experience as a prosecution lawyer to become an FBI agent.
