Difference Between Egoist and Egotist

ego_bookEgoist vs Egotist

Though the two words ‘” egoist and egotist’” look similar, they are different in meaning and also in many characteristics.

An egotist is a person who is interested in ‘I’ and only talks about himself. He always tries to see to it that all conversation revolves around him. On the other hand, an egoist believes that he is better and more important than anyone else.

While an egotist talks only about himself and may talk a lot, an egoist is a person who may not talk much about himself but who thinks he is far superior to everyone else.

When it comes to their characters, an egoist is more cunning than an egotist. Unlike an egoist, an egotist will try to get what he wants by any means possible. It is not the way, be it straightforward or devious, which matters to an egotist but the achievement of hsi goal. He will try to achieve what he has in mind in any way he can.

An egotist is a boaster, who goes around bragging about himself even if doing so causes him problems. An egoist, on the contrary, does not boast. An egoist may even talk less if he thinks doing so is going to adversely affect him. An egotist does not think of the consequences, while an egoist evaluates the pros and cons of all his actions.

Another difference is that an egoist is more selfish than an egotist. Though boastful, an egotist may not be selfish at all. An egoist may be described as a selfish person and an egotist as a self-centered person.

1. A egoist can be described as a selfish person and an egotist as a self-centered person.

    QUOTE:

the above is totally bullshit, it should reverse, the correct one is:

An egoist is a person who is interested in ‘I’ and only talks about himself. An egotist believes that he is better and more important than anyone else.

    who worte this clumsy article.

  4. This is a horrible explanation!!!!

An “egotist” is merely a narcissist.
Whereas an “egoist” is a believer in the general doctrine of Egoism – putting oneself first and foremost above others.

  5. nice explanation…

  6. There is a HUGE mistake in the summary — the article is contradicted by stating in the summary that:

” Unlike an egoist, an EGOTIST will try to get what he wants by devious means.”

In the 4th paragraph it is explained that “an egoist is more cunning than an egotist.”

This needs to be corrected for clarity and consistency.
