In the modern world, innovation has seen the development of many tools for use in many aspects of life. These include industrial, medical and even home applications. For home application, devices such as cookers, refrigerators, microwaves, and toasters have been developed. For most people, a microwave is basic kitchen equipment used for food preparation especially warming. There are tons of types of microwaves in the market, depending on the use and the specifications. For most people, however, a major dilemma comes in whereby a person may be unsure about whether to get a countertop or a built-in microwave. 

 

What is a Countertop Microwave?

These are microwaves designed to be placed on the kitchen counter. They are more common and cheaper, although this may depend on the features and power of the microwave. Countertop microwaves are more popular due to their versatility, as they can be placed anywhere. They also have zero installation costs, as one only needs an electrical outlet and some space on the counter. They, however, need a space for placing in the kitchen, which may not always be available. Due to their versatility, they are more common flexible homeowners especially those who may need to constantly shift houses. 

 

What is Built-in Microwaves?

This is a microwave that is neatly tucked into a cabinet or a wall, which allows for free space on the counter. This type is more expensive as compared to the countertop microwaves. The installation may also be a bit tasking and one may need a licensed contractor for proper installation. It is permanently installed, hence is not portable, which may not ideal for some people. It may also expensive to repair as if one part stops working; one may need to replace the whole unit. 

 

Similarities between Countertop and Built-in Microwaves

  • Both are essential components in the kitchen
  • Both are used for the same purpose

 

Differences between Countertop and Built-in Microwaves

  1. Definition

Countertop microwaves are microwaves designed to be placed on the kitchen counter. On the other hand, built-in microwaves are microwaves that are neatly tucked into a cabinet or a wall.

  1. Price

While countertop microwaves are inexpensive, built in microwaves are expensive in terms of installation and maintenance cost. 

  1. Versatility

Countertop microwaves are versatile as they can be moved around. On the other hand, built-in microwaves are not as versatile as they are permanently installed.

  1. Space required

While countertop microwaves require counter kitchen space, built in microwaves require less counter and kitchen space.

  1. Design

While countertop microwaves are placed on kitchen counters, built-in microwaves are fixed in walls or cabinets. 

  1. Installation

The countertop microwaves do not require any installation expertise as they are placed on kitchen counters. On the other hand, built-in microwaves need to be done by a licensed contractor.

Both, however, can serve a person well if the right choice is made.
