Difference Between Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta

Alpha Kappa Alpha vs. Delta Sigma Theta

Many college students are into joining school activities and engaging themselves in being a part of organizations. There are two types of organizations: academic and extracurricular organizations. Academic organizations could be debate teams, math, and science clubs. Extracurricular organizations, however, are not academic related. They mainly focus on self-development, social skills, leadership skills, or even environmental awareness. It will give you a chance to work with people with different personalities that could help you grow as a person.

Sororities and fraternities are examples of extracurricular activities. Joining such organizations can help you meet a lot of people not just from your own sorority but in other sororities as well. You will have the opportunity to network with numerous alumni across the country. It is a lifetime commitment so you will be assured you will have someone beside you always. The most prominent sorority that has gained a good reputation through its existence is the Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta.

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded by a group of nine African American college women on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle led this sorority that increased the opportunities of African American women in certain areas where little power existed. Five years after it was founded, Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated in January of 1913. The sorority includes but is not limited to Caucasian, Indian, Native American, African, and Hispanic college-students. Currently, they have over 900 chapters and a total of over 250,000 members in the United States and in other countries across the world. Since the organization’s establishment, it has helped implement community service programs that have improved economic and social conditions. One of their biggest contributions to the community is the establishment of the Mississippi Health Clinic. The sorority is currently a part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

Five years after Alpha Kappa Alpha was established, twenty-two of its members decided to quit the sorority and formed their own organization which they named Delta Sigma Theta. It was founded on the 13th of January, 1913. Their main goal in establishing this sorority is to strengthen their academic achievements as well as to provide assistance to other individuals that are in need of help. Their first public involvement was in the March, 1913, Women’s Suffrage March. Unlike Alpha Kappa Alpha that was incorporated just 5 years after it was founded, Delta Sigma Theta took 17 years before it was incorporated. Since they are open to members of any nationality, race, or religion, they are the largest African-American Greek-Lettered sorority today. They have more than 950 chapters all around the United States and other countries like Germany, Korea, England, and Jamaica. They have a total of more than 350,000 members which are mostly African-American. Like Alpha Kappa Alpha, they are also a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW).

  1. This artile is incorrect. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was incorporated twice. Once in February 1913 and agin in 1930. Please update this article to provide correct information.

  2. WHO WROTE THIS CRAP? Please be factual with your information. You are attempting to show that there is a difference in the two organizations, but with a BIAS toward Alpha Kappa Alpha. If that is the case, at lease be clear with the facts. AKA never intended to organize as a SORORITY until Delta Sigma Theta was formalized. Lets start there. Also, Delta Sigma Theta became incorporated in 1913 and again in 1930. The vision of this sorority was clear from DAY 1- Never to be confused for a social organization to compliment what a male organization was doing, but to be IMPACTFUL in the communities they serve from DAY 1.

    • In response to Justice stamps yes you are correct the article has major flaws, howeverAlpha Kappa Alpha was not just a social organization nor a social club as some ppl say so lets dissolve this myth immediately. Lyle (Hedgmen at the time) was a junior and could not be president and many time when there are two visionaries there will be some discrepancies. The vision was to be IMPACTFUL and if it were not so neither organization would exist today. Where are you getting your facts? I hope not as biased as the author…

  3. and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s vision at the time was African American COLLEGE women, where Delta Sigma Thetas vision was African American women.

  4. Calm down ladies. The article was informative which ever way you want to look at it…it provided what I needed to know.
