Welding vs Brazing
Welding and brazing are two types of processes that are used for joining different metal parts. These two methods are also used to fix or join broken parts or to fill the gaps in metals. Though these two processes have the same use, they have different mechanisms. They have differences in the use of temperature and the melting of filler and base metals.
Welding is used for joining metal pieces as well as thermoplastics. This is a process by which the base metal as well as the filler metal is melted, and each forms a molten material or a weld pool. This weld pool solidifies to make a strong joint. Unlike welding, only the filler metal is melted in the brazing technique. The filler metal is melted in-between the parts that have to be joined. The wetting that is formed in between the joints gets solidified and gives the joint more strength. So we can conclude that welding melts the base and the filler metal, and brazing melts only the filler metal.
Brazing is similar to soldering. For brazing, the parts of the two metals that have to be joined should be free from oxides. In brazing, the metals that have to be joined together are not heated to their melting points, but only the filler metal is heated just above the melting point.
A difference that can be seen between brazing and welding is in the temperatures. In welding, high temperatures are needed. But in brazing, the temperature is a bit lower than that of the temperature used in welding.
