Freedom of expression is one of the fundamental freedoms that every individual is entitled to. Certain governments, however, and other authorities may impose certain curbs on this fundamental freedom. As such, censorship and restrictions are restraints on the freedom of expression.

Both censorship and restriction are foes of freedom of expression and creativity. Though citizens in many counties have all freedom, the governments have imposed various types of restrictions for quelling the voice of the society as they feel it is detrimental to the society as a whole.

Censorship is the suppression of expression and speech of a community or an individual. Restriction is a certain barrier created for restricting certain activities of a citizen or a community so that it does not spread.

The government may impose censorship on the media, Internet, and electronic media so that news detrimental to the society is not spread. Another example of censorship is of films. Restrictions can include the way a woman should wear a dress especially in the Arab countries.

When comparing the two, restrictions are considered to be milder in nature than censorship. While mandating restrictions, the government or any authority is requesting the people in a polite manner not to do something in particular. On the other hand, censorship is a bit harder as the government or the authorities feel that the activities that are not censored could affect the whole society. Censorship is stricter than a restriction.

Restrictions are based on the morals and ethics in society and is a means to keep certain things within limitations.
