Difference Between Honors and AP

Students aspiring for college studies should either take honors or AP (Advanced Placement) courses.

Teachers design the honors courses locally which are aimed at meeting the requirements of talented students. An honors course is designed in accordance with the curriculum of regular classes and also covers additional subjects and topics in more depth. The courses are organized separately and are only conducted as a supplement to the regular course.

The Advanced Placement courses are designed by teachers from the high school and college that come under the auspices of a college board. The courses are designed on the basis of a national curriculum. Like the honors courses, AP courses are also supplemental to the regular courses.

When comparing the two courses, it can be seen that the honors courses are planned in such a way that they have more academic rigor which clearly shows a candidates’ willingness for facing challenges. Moreover, the rigorous academic courses would also prepare the students for a college setting. However, honors courses are not considered to be equivalent to college level which means that you do not receive college credits.

The Advanced Placement course is a bit tougher than the honors course. Unlike the AP course, honors are fast paced. In Advanced Placement, the topics are covered more in depth than in the honors courses. Moreover, a student pursuing AP has to do more work than a student taking honors. The Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses that earn you college credit.
