Difference Between European Union and European Commission

European Union vs European Commission

Comparing the European Commission (EC) to the European Union (EU) is like telling how the President’s office or the executive branch differs from the broader presidential/democratic form of government. This is because the EC is part of the bigger EU. Read on to know more about these two entities.

Formerly regarded as the European Community, the EU or European Union is a very powerful entity that helps its entire membership become economically sufficient. It has been created after WWII with the aim of preventing another war between any of its members. It also strengthens the economic health of Europe as a whole and not just its member states. The EU actually has 27 member nations. With its presence, economic policies within the continent became more integrated which transformed Europe into what it is today. Because it has so many functions and responsibilities, its roles are being allocated to its minor bodies to which the European Commission is one of which.

The European Commission, otherwise known simply as the Commission, acts as the executive branch that can propose legislation that serves for the benefit of the entire continent. It is also responsible for the usual, day-to-day operations of the Union. It has 27 commissioners collectively known as the College. They have been duly elected from each state. It will be the job of the European Parliament (another branch of the EU) to approve the instatement of these officers. Each of them has a trusted portfolio and acts separately from the respective governments of each state.

Performing an executive role, this commission can defend and endorse treaties. One of the most basic functions of this entity is the drafting of proposals that may help make the legislation process smoother and more efficient. It is also able to decide whether the legislation is being correctly followed by all members. Jose Manuel Barroso is currently the incumbent President of the Commission.

All in all, the EU and EC are different because of the following:

1.The European Union is a bigger international political entity than the European Commission which is just one of its many subbranches.
2.The European Commission acts as an executive branch of the EU and is endowed with administrative functions as well as given the capacity to propose legislation.
3.Among other responsibilities, the Commission is also tasked with running the daily operations of the Union.
