Difference Between BSC and BEng
BSC vs BEng
Graduation is just around the corner for many senior high school students. For most of them, that would mean starting to apply for a university or college of their choice, to pursue a tertiary education degree that would help them land a stable job, and launch them into their desired career path.
Nowadays, applying for a college degree is actually a lot more complicated than it was when our parents did the same thing. With so many universities and colleges offering extremely specialized courses and degrees, many students find themselves having difficulty in chosing which degree is the right one for their ideal career path. This is partly because of the degree prefixes that are attached to certain degrees. Aa example would be trying to see the difference between a BSC and a BEng.
BSC actually stands for Bachelor of Science, while BEng stands for Bachelor of Engineering. A Bachelor of Science degree is commonly recommended for any college degree that requires a student to complete three to five years of education. It is the most common bachelor’s degree title, and it is provided by most universities and colleges. In fact, many colleges and universities will refer to all their programs as Bachelor of Science degree programs. On the other hand, BEng is an undergraduate degree, that is awarded to a student who completes an engineering academic program, which lasts anywhere between three to five years. This bachelor’s degree award is commonly used for undergraduate college degrees in colleges and universities in Australia, China, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Another difference between a BSC and a BEng undergraduate degree, is the academic program that the students undergo for three to five years. BSC degrees are usually theoretically based. This means that most, if not all, of the courses that they would need to complete in the program, involve the use of research, and the proper understanding and analysis of theories and principles that are presented in textbooks, journal reports and past experiments. This includes engineering courses that are considered as Bachelor of Science degree programs. While there are certain laboratory courses that the student needs to complete, these are often done in controlled environments, in order to prove and give the students a further understanding of the theories and principles discussed in class. On the other hand, BEng undergraduate degree programs are more practically oriented. They are the complete inverse of BSC degree programs. Here, students do introduce and familiarize themselves to theories and principles, but the bulk of the academic program is concentrated in applying these theories and principles in a practical manner, which would help them be more prepared when they go and join the corporate world.
Summary
1. BSC and BEng courses are undergraduate degree programs awarded to a student (by a university or college), who has completed an academic program that lasts anywhere between three and five years.
2. BSC is an abbreviation which stands for Bachelor of Science. On the other hand, BEng stands for Bachelor of Engineering.
3. BSC focuses more on theories and principles, while BEng focuses more on practical application.

Thanks.
Thanks. Doubts cleared.
Absolute rubbish. A BEng focuses on theory and principles in more depth in comparison to a BSc. Additionally BEng students are expected to apply the maths and physics they have learnt in real world examples preparing them for the real world.
Typical BEng programmes consist of 25-30 hours a week, where a BSc will only contain 10-15 hours a week.
My experience as a BEng student was the hardest task i have ever undertaken and work 70/80 hour weeks of studying to complete it.
Definitely spot on Mike when you said “A BEng focuses on theory and principles in more depth in comparison to a BSc”.
Useless article.
tell me which one is better BSC or BE
BE
r u sure BE
lol…”learnt”…If you compare the course load and curriculum of a BSc and a BEng it doesn’t take long to see that BEng is clearly the more elementary. Not sure where the 10-15 hours per week figure came from, but I spent probably 10 hours a day out of class…6 days a week. My Bsc degree also required me to take the FE prior to graduating…I’m curious how the BEng prepares students for the PE exam, seeing that every single item on that test was taught to me in depth in mt BSCE courses
Learnt is correct English. You’re just showing your limited linguistic knowledge by laughing at it. Check it out, and not in a US “English”-only dictionary. So are burnt and dreamt.
U are absolutely right I was going to Bsc but changed my mind to BEng Nd it’s much harder Nd better chance for jobs
Are you crazy?
I have spent 10-15 hours on a single course /week. Genetics, biochemistry, micro etc.
We write papers weekly, have labs weekly, tutorials, lectures and help sessions. You are completely out to lunch with your estimation of rigor. A b.sc is all about studying journal articles and thoroughly understanding the theory. If you think otherwise I would like to show you the 100+ papers I wrote as an undergrad.
Oh and we also do math and physics. I completed a year and a half of math and a year of physics. But I also did a year and a half of chemistry, neuroscience and as a biology major.. Biology.
BEng is a tough degree but your comparison of rigor is laughable at best.
I am doing a BScEng and I disagree with your statement. There are a lot of study hours required for this degree to grasp the work. We barely cover practicals and only focus on theoretics and abstraction. If you are talking about 60-70 hours per week in a B.Eng then I can only come to the conclusion that it was an individual matter. People perceive the workload differently and you may have been giving it too much though. I have numerous friends who are doing B.Eng in other universities who say that their workload varies across courses and is still manageable. I say the same for my degree. Another thing that should be noted is that schools vary in difficulty. E.g. Electrical may be a bit more challenging than Mining or Chemical engineering, but less than Aeronautical or Nuclear. Bring context before you bash a whole degree type.
From where you completed your degree of bsc eg and how you applied
Hello…I Completed By Plus 2 In India I Want To Pursue By UG Degree In Engineering May I Know What Was Best Course For Me Is It B.Sc Or B.S.E
I chose BScEng without this knowledge and now I’m into my second year and I HATE the abstraction! It has to be worth it after I graduate.
That’s so true am a graduate BEng Electrical Engineering student
In the 1970s, B.Sc(Eng) instead of B.Eng was offered for engineering courses in UK.
Absolutely agree. You often hear dropouts from BEngr but rarely from BSc, simply because the former is exponentially more difficult.
BEngr graduates can continue into both MEngr as well as MSc, but not otherwise. I leave you to wonder why.
Do you have any accredited reference document ?
My son just finished his BEng Metalurgic Ingeneering qualifications in South Africa and is searching for a work oppertunity overseas.
Could you help?
This is his e-mail address.
Kind Regards

i can`t understand it. notify me at email
3 year Bsc degree is not an Engineer yet. In order to be an angineer you have to do Bsc (Eng) which normally take 4 years.
BSCE is a 5 yr course mandatory. U got theory of structures, reinforced concrete design
I don’t know where u studied engineering but getting a BSCE degree will take u 5 years…that is 20 plus units each semester, and a semester for me during my time in college was 6 months
My BscEng is 4 years and the fourth year comes with honours to it.
There’s no scientific research that a student has to spend 4,5or 6 yrs to attain a degree,,that system should be checked,
Plllllllz any one help me..!
I have done 3 year diploma of civil engineering
Now I take admission in university I confused that
Which course as better for me
B.e.c or B.s.c
And mentioned with best university
Plllllllz tell me
My contact number 03472044636
BsE is better than BEc you learn more about science and engineering
and pp with BsE are highly recommended in the industry
B.Sc is most valuable course when compared B.E. Because B.Sc is Pure Science it can be modified by several researches, But In B.E. The sylabus completely depends on Pure Science. And they create it as Applied Science. So I Will Prefer all to do B.Sc.
I feel the same way some what . its like B.E Is studying about something that is created , along with theories behind it . Like spoon feeding both application and concept . but bsc is just the theory and extra stuff without digging to deep. Which will slow students find their own ideas for the cocept easily .
i dont know bsc be
I am confused about this !
But at present situation which one is best
I need to be graduate only in 3years so which graduation is better for me. I am a science maths student. pls suggest me.
Here’s a little example. Few years ago, me and my colleague from work started a degree to satisfy engineering position at work. I have chosen to follow Beng, he decided to do engineering course with different uni but with Bsc. Due to study material to cover I could only do max 60 units/year (as this was to study and work full time). That would require around 30-40 hours a week(especially for math and Eng modules). My collegue took 120 units / year with one day release programme with aprox 20-30 hours /week. After comparing our modules, he only had covered basics, but managed to finish 4 modules @ 30 units each. Both of us will be engineers as a result, but I’ll have an Eng degree, he’ll finish with Bsc, mine will take a lot longer though..I think Beng course is more indepth and focused on engineering problems and solutions. This is to be able to apply science and methods to real life situations. Bsc focuses on selected science and will allow you to study science indepth. If you want to study engineering, than go for Eng, if you are inrested in Science (selected or in general) than the Bsc is your thing.
My girlfriend was insulted when I accidentally said that she was doing a BSc (chemical) and corrected me promptly and said that when you can’t cut it with a BEng you do a BSc.
She also made a joke and said that “How do you know when someone is doing a BEng? They tell you!” Haha
On a serious note though 28 students have moved/dropped out of the BEng in her class.
And what a differences between BE and BET(bachelor of engineering technology) ?
BSc and BEng vary around the world. But BSc is certainly a much more generic term – you could get a BSc in Sociology or Psychology, which is generally much easier to get and less exclusive than a BEng degree. BEng degrees are usually better recognised.
In the UK, if you mess up the last year of your BEng (even just one exam) you will often be awarded a BSc instead since you don’t meet the BEng requirements, and having a BSc can therefore suggest that something went wrong. Also, higher-regarded institutions tend to confer BEng rather than BSc. Basically there seem to be stricter requirements and regulation for BEng.
Perhaps there could be a benefit to having a BSc if you intend to go purely into academia or research. But for anything else I can’t think why you would want a BSc instead.
I have an engineering MSc but it is sometimes not considered as good as a BEng when seeking a job :/
In these 2cources which has more scope in India
I’m a student of b.sc.physics 1st year.BT I’m interested in aeronautical field or aircrafts.
I can make aircrafts with the help of paper.and I know mechanical engr.drwaing ….so is it gud to do b.sc.
Actually I want to change my stream…so what I do..????
Any suggestion..
Or do b.tech.aeronautical engr.
So….what should I do
Then, what is the difference between a person who graduated with a BEng in Chemical engineering and a BSc in Chemical engineering?
I want to study BEng but countries that have BEng offer very high prices like min 19000£ or min 20000$. So I have to apply BSc to an Eastern European country. I hope good universities in western Europe would accept BSc but idk :/ I’m senior year btw.
Come to Ghana. At AIT it’s affordable.
Guys I read Ur replies and I am a student of BSC SEM 2 .I talk to my Btech friends and I got to know that BSC is much tuffer than engineering, yes it talks in depth abt science whereas engineering is all practical knowledge .
I am not saying that engineering is of no use it’s a great knowledge degree coz maximum study you have to do is practically where as in BSC theoretical knowledge is maximum. After complicating BSC of 3 year and MSc of 2 years I will have hundreds of options for my post graduation but nowadays engineering doesn’t have that much value left.

THANKS A LOT 🙂
Hi guys, I’ve read all your comments. So it looks like a BSC will be quicker to complete in Australia (3 yrs as opposed to 5), but have less job options and lower paid positions? What about in the U.S? As thats where I want to practice.
I remember the former CEO of Safaricom, Michael Joseph who said that recruiting a graduate from UoN for the job will require the company to spend a lot of resources for retraining the graduate in order to work, meaning they only know theory. We all know that UoN offers BSc. Now this is why Safaricom mainly recruit their engineers from Moi University that offers BEng and who are more practical oriented as is expected for real engineers. In addition, this is why more than 90% of Safaricom Engineers are from Moi University and not any other university in Kenya. You can therefore decide to make a choice from this point concerning the best course you want to take.
All of you are right and wrong before you conclude ask wha t is the deferent between engineering and science bachelor of science in engineering has to do with theory and research no practical, bachelor of engineering has to do with practical, research, implimentation and design, hours spend in research by B.sc holder is what B.eng spend in design, implimentation.A holder of B.sc engineering can only lecture and be used for research while a holder of B.eng in engineering can lecture, research, implement and design. Please check the dictionary meaning of the two degree before conclusion
I am currently pursuing my final year out of 4 for a B.Eng degree in Finnish UAS. From what I know, research universities provide a 3 year B.Sc, followed by a voluntary 2 year M.Sc. A UAS, or university of applied sciences, (or hogschule I think in Germany), offers 4-5 years of B.Eng, followed by a voluntary 1 year of M.Eng, which can only be done after a few years experience in the job market.
In terms of overall knowledge gathered from studying this is how I would rank the degrees(1=highest,4=lowest)
4:B.Sc
3:B.Eng
2:M.Eng
1:M.Sc
Ofcourse there are many factors that play in here, field of study, specialization, university, courses and credits, etc. However, with confidence, I can say that you are ill prepared to enter a job market with a B.Sc, but are perfectly prepared for a low to mid tier job as a B.Eng. However the chances of getting a high tier job is best with an M.Sc followed by an M.Eng, though an M.Eng may find it easier to apply the acquired knowledge for personal benefit better than an M.Sc who can conduct research and analysis better for midsized to big organizations.
However, this mainly apples to Finnish and German universities. And stereotypically many companies tend to disregard Eng as they are specialists and are therefore not managerial material. That does not stop an Eng from joining an M.Sc programme. But a B.Sc does not have the practical qualifications, (unless with a minimum amount of work experience), to do an M.Eng programme.
Thank you
Pls telll me Which degree is most acceptable in australia..(Beng or Bsc)
What is a BSC in Engineering vs a BEng?
