Difference Between Honda Accord and Honda CR-V

honda-cr-vHonda Accord vs. Honda CR-V

One of the most trusted names in the automotive world is Honda. With its flagship brand, the Accord, being awarded Car of the Year numerous times, there’s no denying the quality of automotive engineering that the company has put into their cars. This has, in essence, become the benchmark for which other midsize sedans have to follow, to keep up with the Accord. This time around we compare the Accord against one of its stable mates, the CR-V. Although it’s not of the same category, this comparison is merely to see how a Car of the Year awardee stacks up against its brethren.

We start with the most basic for both models. The Honda Accord LX has a 2.4L inline-4, which produces 177 horsepower at 6,500rpm, and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. This thrifty engine has a fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon for city and highway driving. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for this model is $21,765.

Meanwhile, the CR-V is a 4-door, 5-passenger sport-utility vehicle. It shares the same powerplant as that of the Accord, but produces a bit more horsepower, with 180 at 6,800rpm, and gives a little over 24 mpg in fuel efficiency. There is only one transmission available, which is a 5-speed automatic with overdrive.

Aside from sharing the same badge, engine and front-wheel drive system, both vehicles have 4-wheel ABS on ventilated solid disc brakes. Although, that is where the similarities end, because in terms of curb weight, the Accord LX comes out in a slightly trimmer 3230 lbs., whereas the CR-V, being a sport utility vehicle, weighs in at 3389 lbs. The Accord’s weight is upheld by 16-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/60 All-Season tires, while the CR-V has 17 inch alloy wheels 225/65.

One must remember though, that all these numbers are for the entry-level models only, for both car manufacturers. Things get a bit more upscale, more competitive and pricier as you go up the different trim levels. The Accord offers three different trim levels, namely, the base LX, the upgraded EX, and the top of the line EX-L, which offers premium features such as leather upholstery and an optional navigation system.

As for the CR-V, there is a choice of 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive versions for the following trim levels: LX; EX; EX-L and EX-L, which has a navigation system. With two for each trim level, that makes up for a total of 8 trim levels from which to choose!

One thing that makes the CR-V a better choice than the Accord, is the availability of 4-wheel drive for all trim levels. With a higher ground clearance and ride height, you need not worry if you ever catch yourself veering into uneven terrain. The CR-V also offers plenty of passenger room, cargo capacity, and a sedan-like ride and handling. With a perfect blend of size, power and capability, the CR-V is clearly the best choice for the smart car buyer.
