Many people struggle with constipation whereby an individual has less than three bowel movements in one week. Constipation not only causes discomfort but can also be a symptom of other underlying medical conditions. To help prevent constipation, one should eat foods with more fibre, drink lots of water, exercise and even have bowel movements at the same time every day. However, it is now easy to manage constipation with medicinal solutions such as Metamucil and Colace. Although both can be used to relieve constipation, they have differences as explained below.
What is Metamucil?
This is a natural fiber medication used to relieve constipation by increasing the bulk and water in the stool making it easier to pass.
This medication should be taken by mouth with a full glass of water as directed by your doctor. It is also available in wafers which should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. Doctors may also prescribe powder forms. The doses should be measured as per directions and mixed with a full glass of water.
Dosage is based on the medical condition, age and response to treatment. Since Metamucil can decrease the absorption of other medications, it should be taken two hours before other medications or as advised by the doctor. It can also take 1-3 days for the medicine to start working.
It is made from natural products and has other health benefits such as making a person feel full and lowering constipation. However, it can cause stomach cramps and gas.
It is affordable but is more expensive than Colace.
What is Colace?
This a prescription or over-the-counter medication used to relieve constipation.
It is advisable to take Colace by mouth with a full glass of water at bedtime or as directed by the doctor. Although the dosage depends on the medical condition, you should discontinue this medication if you develop diarrhoea.
To ensure you get the correct measurement if using the liquid form, measure with a measuring spoon or device or use a dropper. This medication, however, may not stimulate a bowel movement fast. It can take up to 5 days and should be used as a short-term treatment.
It is available in pill, liquid or enema form. It is also affordable and cheaper than Metamucil.
