What is Kanchipuram?
Woven from pure mulberry silk, this is sarees produced in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu region in India. They are commonly worn as occasional and bridal wear by women in Karnakata, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. In the weaving process, three sari shuttles are used, with the weaver working from different directions with her aide, with the body and the border woven separately and then interlocked together. The joint is, however strong that the borders cannot detach. There are many available designs that derive inspiration from scriptures and images in temples, animals and natural features.
What is Dharmavaram Sarees?
These are handwoven textiles with zari and mulberry silk and are made in Dharmavaram, Anantapur, India. Essential raw materials used in the production of Dharmavaram sarees include zari threads, mulberry silk, soap, water, and acid dyes. To obtain the best quality of silk, steam is used to boil cacoons hence obtaining the yard which is then twisted. To remove natural gums, the yarn is then degummed, a process that involves boiling yarn with soap and soda ash. Acid is then used to dye the sarees, after which it is dried on bamboo sticks. The pre-loom process follows thereafter with the winding of hank yarn, street sizing and the weaving process begins.
The sarees are commonly worn in cold weather conditions and in functions.
