Differences Between Vaseline And Petroleum Jelly

Vaseline vs Petroleum Jelly

Vaseline and petroleum jelly are often mistaken for being the same thing but what people do not know is that Vaseline and petroleum jelly still have distinct differences that many people are not aware of. Vaseline is widely known as a brand name of petroleum jelly and that is actually a fact. Although their differences may be not that noticeable, they do still exist.

Vaseline and Petroleum Jelly

In 1859, Vaseline was manufactured and was used mainly for medical purposes by Robert Cheeseborough, a young chemist during that time, working for the Cheeseborough Manufacturing Company. Later on in 1987, Unilever purchased it from Cheeseborough, but they decided to keep the name, which it still has. Vaseline is made up of pure petroleum jelly combined with minerals and microcrystalline wax which makes it smoother. It has fragrances such as lavender oil or baby powder. More often that not, it is sold in various forms in the market – Vaseline could be in the form of lotions, ointments or creams. It can also be used as a lubricant and it helps protect minor cuts and burns.

On the other hand, petroleum jelly is made up of a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons. In 1859, oil miners in Pennsylvania discovered the substance. It was stiff like cold wax and black in color. However, the end result of factory-made petroleum jelly smells like oil and gas mainly because it is extracted from real petroleum. Oftentimes, it is referred to as petrolatum, white petrolatum, or white paraffin. If it is derived from natural petroleum, it becomes a translucent, semisolid mix of hydrocarbons.  Oftentimes, it is sold in small purse-sized tubes, or sometimes larger tubs. Uses of petroleum jelly include lubricating, coating and moisturizing. Petroleum jellies aid the use of cosmetics, and the treatment of fungus, genital rashes, nosebleeds, diaper rashes, and even chest colds.

Health Is Wealth

Ultimately, the only main difference between Vaseline and petroleum jelly is that Vaseline is made up of pure petroleum jelly which contain minerals and microcrystalline wax so it is smoother, while petroleum jelly is made up of a partial solid mix of hydrocarbons that comes from mines.

Both Vaseline and petroleum jelly are used for the removal of make-up. However, according to most research, both are dangerous to one’s skin. Vaseline is not good for the skin because it sticks to the person’s skin and it cannot be cleaned off with water, or even with soap. It becomes sticky and it attracts dust particles, which later on cause acne. However, it is good for moisturizing dry areas, chapped, or sore skin. It is also used as a base for lip balms. Both Vaseline and petroleum jelly come from the same place where gasoline comes from so they are not exactly from clean nature. They are not eco-friendly either. While it is nice to use these products, the danger these things will bring will cost you even more – so it is just best to find alternative products.

  1. So they are basically the same thing? Trying to figure out which would be best for my skin…

    Lewis

    • I don’t believe Vaseline causes acne or is bad for the skin. It has been used for years as a skin lubricant. I used it since a child and have never gotten acne or any other skin problem from it, in fact it helps with dry itchy skin and can actually cure cracked hands over night. My son uses it in the cream form for eczema and it keeps it under control. He used other medicines prescribed by the Doctor and they did not work Also, Vaseline and petroleum jelly can be washed of with soap and warm water after the excess is wiped off.

      • It should be fine as long as it is not used on the face. The skin on the face is much more prone to oiliness and blocked pores, so if used on the face petroleum jelly will cause acne.

        • As a fighter we have limited options. Although neither of the two helps where pain is concerned but it does help the skin by lubricating it when the punch or Kick connects the face.
The gloves will tear apart the skin with friction and force of the punch if the jelly doesn’t doesn’t slip it off upon impact.
The result will still be a K. O but far safer in the long run of a Fighters career.

        • I guess there is always exceptions to the rule. I have used vaseline or white petroleum jelly on my face and hands from the age of 8 and im 52 now. Never had acne. Suffering from dry skin and eczema no other moisturizer could offer better cheaper results

      • Hi, does it also stop the itching? I have Ecema bad on palms of hands and been using prescription creams…Started using vasaline 2 days ago and has helped so much from cracking and splitting skin, which I think is the result of using the cream to stop the itching!!! If so I will just use Vaseline 🙂
        Thanks

        • It probablt won’t help stop the itching short-term, but will cure dryness (probably the cause) and prevent infection. When you have a skin lesion removed, dermatologists will tell you to plaster petroleum jelly on, as it will actually heal faster under that, and won’t scab. Many moisturisers use it as a base, with other ingredients added to speed up absorption aka ‘vanishing’
You can also get lighter, liquid paraffin based products for use in the shower or bath, e.g Oilatum

      • My husband use Vaseline as a child and author all through our marriage for his eczema it really made a difference it worked well

  2. I suffered a second degree sunburn and after trying everything everyone recommended to no avail, I turned to white petroleum jelly and just like that, pure relief and it started to heal emediatly

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if Aloe and Petroleum Jelly have a similar molecular composition, both do come from plants after all.

  3. I cant praise vasaline enough for dry skin. Marvelous.

  4. So many red flags, starting with the lede containing the phrase “and that is actually a fact”. All the mumbo jumbo is innocuous until we’re told that both petroleum jelly and Vaseline (they’re the same thing, but not really, but actually yes!) is dangerous for the skin, according to uncited “most research”. The rationale is so absurd—it’s sticky, thus attracting dust, thus causing acne—that hopefully even a half-conscious reader will realize how unsound the advice is. But in case not: anyone here seeking anything resembling medical/personal care advice, be warned that this is NOT the right place; any advice gleaned here should be summarily dismissed.

  5. I have eczema on my hands for lat 2 years… Creams from Dr. Like Ratio- Mometasone, didn’t work the latest one is Ratio- Amcinonide which stop the Itch but dries and cracks the skin badly. I started using white Petroleum jelly and huge difference overnight! Saw the dr. 2 days ago and he said its fine & to continue using it

  6. I used Vaseline on my toe fungus that I have had for awhile & it cleared it up in 2 days . I used Dr. priscriptions for years with no results .

  7. I have a wax jacket that needs waterproofing because it’s dried up and the colour has paled and patchy and I just know for a fact I’m going to use Vaseline to refinish and waterproof it, I will rub it evenly all over and especially in the seams and it’s clearly obvious it will darken to its original colour soften up and be instantly waterproof, it may feel slightly moist for a while but it did when I first bought it new, I will be back to update ;0)

    • Jason what a fabulous idea. When we were kids we used Vaseline to clean patent leather shoes, they came up a treat snd kept the leather supple without cracking. It has its uses and goes on forever!

  8. I think petroleum jelly is the best especially highness milking jelly, Vaseline is just abrand

  9. This is a great secret taught me in 1980 by an old man, when I complaint about the razor bumps after shaving. He told me to stop using the shaving cream and aftershave , and change to Vaseline instead. Since I changed the razor bumps and.the itching are history.

  10. My neighbor is 70 yrs old and a prefect complexion. I asked her what she uses she said vasiline. I was shocked. But dang she sure looks good

  11. Petroleum Jelly is also best use penis Enlargement? For how many days?

  12. Will it hurt you if you use it around your nose with oxygen canniis on? They say vaseline will so that’s why I was wondering. I’m really dry around my nose and all my face really because of the oxygen.

    • I use it on my face (around my nose eyes and mouth mostly) and have NEVER had a problem. It has never caused me acne. I put it on before bed most times and my skin looks glowy and healthy by morning.

  13. Terrible article

    • Okay look the Vaseline going on the face thing is pretty easy to explain, Vaseline and petroleum jelly trap whatever the hell is under it and blocks everything above it until it is in the skin, if you are terribly dirty and you cake this product on you, bad idea, the best time to use it is just out of the shower towel off and apply it while the skin is damp, you will be clean and the moisture from the shower will be locked into your skin, this is how I use it without any acne or other skin related problems it works wonders.

  14. I have inter trigo in groins and suffering a lot due to itch and burning. can anybody suggest for relief?

  15. Can lubricating jelly in small packets I had for catheterizing now be used as a lip balm?

  16. Wow it’s so weird seeing a thread of comments without any ccp trolls.
