Differences Between Practicum And Internship
Entering the world of employment is a tough thing to do, especially with the new graduates entering the working world almost every 6 months. Hence, if you have no edge in the field that you want to work in, it would be difficult for you. Millions of other applicants are striving for the job, and if you do not have credentials that will at least suffice for what the company needs, you are off the short list.
Therefore, this just goes to show that you have to strive hard to gain recommendations from people who are respected and skilled in your field. Although getting a chance to work for them might be a long shot, you can just work your way up by gaining experiences from practicum or internships.
Both might sound just the same, but actually they are not. They vary in the process but serve the same purpose.
A practicum is a part-time job that lets you work in the real world. You may record data, work with your mentor, and gain experience in numerous tasks that need to be done. You do not necessarily have to have a previous experience in the field. You can do this as a part-time worker and come in once or twice a week, depending on your contract. A practicum technically is a type of schooling that would serve as a way to gain experience and learning in a certain field. You would practice using the knowledge of that field with real objectives that you are encouraged to reach. However, since it is a part-time and entry-level position, the pay tends to be low. But when you persevere enough to get more than one practicum in a specific field, you might just work with a popular professional in the field. This can land you that recommendation that you have been aiming for to get a stable, high-end job.
Internships, on the other hand, involve being in a job for a longer duration. They specifically look for people who have been studying in that certain field. The lessons that you have learned from your study will be applied to carry out the responsibilities given to you. This is a more intense experience than that of practicum. Thus, it is harder to find and get hired for in an industry. You might want to start small with internships until you are trusted enough to work for the big bosses. An intern that has done a great job will receive great recommendations, which could lead to employment right after graduation. To add to this, many interns are paid well, as opposed to those students who take part in a practicum.
Both of these experiences could be relevant to your success. Hence, you should work towards gaining the right traits to be successful in either of them. Letters of appreciation, recommendation or even a reward can be gained if you have given your best effort. With these aids, you can now take on the employment world with confidence.
