Difference Between WSOP and WPT
WSOP vs WPT
“WSOP” and “WPT” are two different competitions of poker. WSOP began in 1970 and WPT began in 2002.
WSOP
“WSOP” stands for “World Series of Poker.” It is a series of tournaments of poker which is held each year in Las Vegas. It was first introduced by Benny Binion in 1970 who invited seven of the best poker players in the U.S. to compete against each other at the Horseshoe Casino. Since 2005, the WSOP has been sponsored by Harrah’s Entertainment.
This event welcomes anyone who can afford a buy-in in the range of $1,500 to $50,000. Two other ways of entering the tournament are: to win a seat in a lower-priced tournament as there is no ladder system to reach the top, or win an online or card room tournament and get a free seat in the tournament. For winning a free seat it is advisable that one starts playing early as the contestants have to accumulate points over a course of 3-4 months of weekly tournaments.
The winner of the WSOP receives a WSOP bracelet and a multi-million dollar prize. The one who wins the WSOP Main Event is the World Champion of Poker. The Main Event is the culmination of World Series of Poker with a $10,000 no-limit hold ‘em. It is the biggest event of the WSOP.
WPT
“WPT” stands for “World Poker Tour.” It is a series of poker tournaments that takes place throughout the year. It started in the year 2002. The WPT welcomes players who can afford a buy-in in the range of $2,500-$25,000. The WPT is associated with a TV series broadcasting the tournament’s final table game. The WPT was started by Steven Lipscomb who was a television producer and CEO of Wpt E, the firm which was in control of the WPTs till 2009.
Like WSOP, free seats can be won in the WPT also. Many tournaments in the Bay Area have card room seats for the WPT. The free seats can be won by playing and winning online on ClubWPT.com too.
Winning these tournaments is not considered easy as they are especially designed for professional players and are regularly broadcast on television. The WPT has a long history of being aired on the Travel Channel, NBC, CBS, GSN, and on Fox Sports Net.
