Difference Between MDS 2.0 and MDS 3.0

Health as we all know is our wealth. But sometimes we cannot prevent illnesses and diseases from the environment we live in. Stress and work can also contribute to this. So what we do is we go to a healthcare facility that is trusted and accredited.

These facilities in order for us to take advantage of their services must be first accredited by different agencies. One of these agencies is the Medicaid and Medicare agency which aims to know whether a facility is appropriate for their healthcare insurance once a person with a disability has an illness.

In order to do this, they have sets of guidelines and protocols in the form of MDS. MDS has the latest version which is the MDS 3.0 and the former which is the MDS 2.0. So what are the differences between the two?

“MDS” stands for “Minimum Data Set” which is a set of information that is utilized for clinical assessment of Medicare and Medicaid residents in a long-term care facility. It particularly has a core set of screening and assessment guidelines which are a part of the RAI or Resident Assessment Instrument. This MDS will aid in picking up the assessments for health problems. This MDS is performed on each resident of Medicare or Medicaid-certified facilities.

MDS 3.0 has generally some additional revisions than MDS 2.0. For the MDS 3.0, assessments are submitted to the national system, but in the MDS 2.0, it was only in the state system. The submission time should be shorter which is two weeks from the completion of the assessment in the MDS 3.0, and the process for error correction is much easier to identify.

In the MDS 3.0, antibiotics and anticoagulants were added to the list of medicines that would be assessed. There are also therapy changes in the MDS 3.0. Resident interviews are also present in a MDS 3.0 which are not present in its earlier version. For evaluating mood and depression, an MDS 3.0 uses a Patient Health Questionnaire which checks for symptoms of depression. Other changes in the MDS 3.0 include: falling history on admission assessment, swallowing disorder items, and a staff examination of the mouth.
