One of the first signs of allergy or allergic reaction is itchiness. Allergens usually trigger allergic reactions. The generic name of Benadryl is Diphenhydramine while the generic name of Zyrtec is Cetirizine.Zyrtec is a second-generation antihistamine while Benadryl is a first-generation antihistamine. Benadryl was invented during 1943 by Dr. George Rieveschl of the University of Cincinnati. It was marketed then by McNeil-PPC. Zyrtec is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. Benadryl is the first antihistamine in the world.
Benadryl is commonly used in allergies and its symptoms, such as itchiness. It can also be used in colds, motion sickness, insomnia and extrapyramidal symptoms. Zyrtec is indicated for hay fever, angioedema, and urticaria.
Zyrtec is available in 10 mg tablets for adults. The usual dose for children age 6 months to 2 years old is 1/2 teaspoon in syrup form. With Benadryl, 25-50 mg is given every 4-6 hours for 12 years old and above while 12.4-25 mg is given for children 6-12 years old.
Most antihistamines have anxiolytic effects so this will make you a bit sleepy and drowsy. It is not advisable to take this drug while operating heavy machinery as it may cause accidents. Do not take this drug prior to driving cars as it may also cause accidents.
