Black vs. Jet Black

Black and jet black belong to the umbrella concept of color. Both pertain to color with respect to its intensity and undertones.

Both words are related especially to hair color. Black is considered as the darkest and most common of hair colors. It is found on many animals, including humans, who exhibit the color in their hair throughout all backgrounds and ethnicities.

As a hair color, black hair has a large quantity of eumelanin (a polymer found in the hair that gives black hair its color) and is less dense compared to other hair colors. It is also compatible with many skin tones – light, fair, medium, olive, brown, and black. Additionally, black has a natural shine that makes it the shiniest of all hair colors when it is in an untreated state.

Black is a natural hair color and is not intense. Its lack of intensity and makes it one of the colors that are least likely to fade over a longer period of time. Compared to other black hair dyes, it is less dramatic and intense. It is also considered as “straight,” having no undertones or hues in its color.

On the other hand, jet black refers to a shade of black that is characterized as darker than black, with blue or purple undertones. The term “jet black” is derived from the color of a stone called jet. The stone is a minor gemstone used in jewelry as a black stone. The stone is made from decaying wood under extreme pressure that gives it its color. The term is also an English description of black hair, aside from “raven black.”

As a hair color, jet black is a variant of a hair dye for people with black hair. The jet black shade can also occur as a natural shade or color of hair. Jet black is characterized as having more intensity in color and containing blue and/or purple undertones. It also has a darker, more dramatic, and richer color compared to natural black. In some hair treatments, it can give off an extra shine due to the dye and the reflection of light when it hits the hair. Jet black, compared to black, is more specific, while the other is considered as a general term.

Both black and jet black hair dyes are mainly used for cosmetic purposes, especially for women and men who wish to have healthy-looking hair or hide unwanted grey hairs to improve their appearance. Aside from natural hair and hair dyes, these colors can also come as hair extensions or wigs for similar purposes and effects.

Summary:

1. “Black” is a general term for a color, while “jet black” is a more specific and descriptive term.
2. Regarding hair color, one major difference is that the natural black color lacks the intensity and undertones of jet-black hair or dye. This intensity can be observed when the sunlight hits the hair.
3. Black as a natural hair color is a matter of genetics, while jet-black hair dye comes in a hair coloring kit.
4. Natural black does not fade easily, but jet black dyed hair needs to be constantly retouched and reapplied.
5. Jet-black hair can be achieved naturally and by artifice, while natural black hair is genetic.
6. Jet-black hair can have blue or purple undertones, while natural black doesn’t have any undertones.

  1. That’s odd to say that jet black is unnatural. Until my 30’s, my hair was naturally jet black from birth.

I remember changing barbers (when I had hair) in my middle teens and she wanted to know what type of tint I was using. I explained to her that my hair had always had suttle blue highlights. She didn’t believe me until about 4 years of cutting my hair.

Now that I’m in my mid 40s and balding with salt and pepper hair I’ve noticed that the blue sheen has fading, but when I do lose a strand of black hair from my beard it still has the bluish highlight.

Sorry the writer of this article doesn’t know their subject very well. And by the way my younger cousins Steven has the exact same hair color I had. Even with the blue highlights.

    Mike
