Akbar vs. Shahjahan

Akbar and Shahjahan were the greatest Mughal emperors who ruled India. Both rulers were known for their respective skills in quite different fields.

Akbar, who was popularly known as “Akbar the Great,” was the third Mughal emperor. Shahjahan was the fifth Mughal emperor.

Shahjahan’s grandfather was Akbar. Shahjahan was the son of Akbar’s son Jehangir. Akbar assumed the throne of Delhi on February 14, 1556, and reigned for 50 years until 1605. Shahjahan assumed the throne of Delhi on January 25, 1628.

Akbar was born on October 14, 1542, at Umerkot fortress in Sindh. He was born when Emperor Humayun and his wife Hamida Banu Begam were taking refuge at this fortress. Shahjahan was born on January 5, 1592, in Lahore and was the son of Jehangir and Gossaini.

Akbar had much interest in painting. Art and culture flourished during his reign. It was during his time he painted the palace with murals. He was also a great supporter of the European school of painting.

Shahjahan’s period is known as the golden age of Mughal architecture. The Taj Mahal, which Shahjahan built as tomb for his wife Mumtaj, stands as a monument of the glory of the architectural beauty. He is also credited with building the Red Fort, Juma Masjid, and the Pearl Mosque.

During Akbar’s rule, there was peace and no known rebellions or wars took place. But Shahjahan faced rebellions and unrest. The Portuguese attack and the Islamic rebellion happened during Shahjahan’s reign. Shahjahan had an army that was four times larger than that of Akbar’s.

Akbar had a good relationship with the Rajputs. He even married Rajput princesses as a part of diplomacy. On the other hand, Shahjahan captured Rajput kingdoms.

When Akbar had three sons, Shahjahan had four sons.
