Appearances are always important when it comes to interaction. One of the factors that can affect an individual’s appearance and first impression comes from having a good-looking smile, and the appearances of a person’s teeth helps to achieve that kind of smile. A tooth is a calcified structure found in the mouths or jaws of many vertebrates, and their main purpose is to break down food. However, the teeth are also a very vulnerable spot. This is especially true to people. They may be hard, but they are not indestructible. Doing actions like ripping a plastic package with your teeth, biting your nails, grinding a hard object with your teeth, and having them get struck by a moving object can damage the integrity of your teeth and have them chipped. Some people can get their teeth misshapen due to different instances. Others have problems because of the discoloration of teeth due to medications and aging. But the good thing is that the modernizations of dentistry have paved different ways to these solve these problems.
One of the methods used by those who practice dentistry to fix these problems is the use of veneers. These veneers are made out of a layer of corrective material. This material is placed on the surface of the tooth. This serves to improve the looks of a tooth or to prevent any further damage to the surface of a tooth. There are two different types of material to fabricate veneers; these types are composite and dental porcelain. A veneer made out of composite material is placed directly or indirectly by a specialist in a dental facility and after that bonded to the tooth by resin cement. A veneer made of dental porcelain can only be fabricated indirectly.
The person who invented and pioneered veneers is one of the dentists that was stationed in California, Charles Pincus. During his time, veneers can fall off in a short period because denture adhesive was the only thing holding them. These veneers were used to temporarily change the appearances of an actor’s teeth. Veneers improved in 1982 after research was started by Richard J. Simonsen and John R. Calamia. Their research concluded that hydrofluoric acid could be used to carve the porcelain and strengthen the bonds that can be obtained from both composite resins and porcelain which enabled the porcelain veneers on the tooth’s surface to take hold permanently. This is proven in an article by Calamia and Horn. Calamia describes the technique for proper fabrication and the correct arrangement of the modified porcelain veneers using the refractory model technique, while Horn described the appropriate method of using and placing platinum foil for the fabrication of a veneer.
Another method to restore teeth is by using lumineers. Lumineers is a new type of veneer. It is thinner and stronger than the original. Lumineers also provide the same benefits like that of the veneers, but one of the differences between them is that this improved version does not require the tooth to be reshaped. So if the individual wants to remove this layer from the tooth, the original structure of the tooth will be intact unlike traditional veneers. The disadvantage of lumineers is that if there is no tooth preparation, it will feel bulkier than the traditional veneers.
