Difference Between Quick-Cooking Oats and Old-Fashioned Oats
Quick-Cooking Oats vs Old-Fashioned Oats
Oats are a type of cereal grain which are grown for their seeds. They can be processed into oatmeal and rolled oats for human consumption while those that are unprocessed can be used for livestock feed. These processed oats are made by having them parboiled, crushed, dried, and de-branned. Processed oats have other numerous uses like being used in several different types of drinks, for example, Oatmeal Stout. They can also be used to make oat bread. Other parts of oats are used for medical purposes. Oat extract is used for soothing skin conditions, and oat grass which is used for a woman’s menstrual cycle, osteoporosis, dysmenorrhea, and urinary tract infections.
Oats are considered a health food. They have high a nutritional value and have the properties for lowering cholesterol. Consumption of oat bran can also lower the risk of having heart disease. These benefits are contributed by having inositol, a chemical compound, which has the properties of maintaining and regulating blood cholesterol. Oats are also known for having a high protein value matching the value which can be obtained from meat, milk, and eggs. Other attributes are having high levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and Vitamin B complex. All of these minerals and vitamins are vital in maintaining the nervous system. Unrefined oatmeal is also known to reduce stress. Oats also possess phytochemicals which are said to protect the body from cancer and other chronic diseases. In addition to having an abundance of soluble fiber which can help with the process of digestion, they are ideal for people who want to lose weight.
There are different types of oats. Among these types are called quick-cooking oats and old-fashioned oats. Old-fashioned oats are also named as rolled oats. The inedible husk of the oat is removed before the grain is eaten. These oats are rolled by a heavy roller to force the shape of the oat groat to become flatter and are also steamed as well. These oats are also known to be chewier and have a rougher texture.
Quick oats, also known as quick-cooking rolled oats, are more finely processed compared to old-fashioned oats. The oat grains are removed from their husk by impact, and then it goes into the process of heating and cooling to stabilize the oat groats. This type of oat is also cut into smaller pieces as well reducing the overall size of the oat. The idea behind this is to reduce the time to cook these oats and to ensure that the oats absorb water a lot quicker. An example of this is that quick-cooking oats can be cooked inside a microwave for three to four minutes while old-fashioned oats are cooked for around five minutes.
Both types of oatmeal are made from 100 per cent oats and possess the same nutritional values. Quick oats are not to be confused with instant oatmeal, the latter having less than 100 per cent oat content.
