Difference Between GTX and GTS

GTX vs GTS

Naming conventions used by graphics card makers like Nvidia and ATI are among the most confusing and difficult to decipher. With Nvidia, there are two common suffixes to the names of their top-end products; GTS and GTX. Although the two is more than enough for most users, only those with top-end machines would truly see the difference between these two. GTS cards are the top-end cards that are meant for mainstream users who want excellent and fast graphics for gaming and multimedia use. On the other hand, GTX graphics cards are intended for enthusiasts who want to push their machines to the limits and get the absolute best. Due to the large number of GTX and GTS graphics cards available, these differences are just generalizations and not specific to any card.

Extreme performance is at the heart of GTX graphics cards and it starts off with a boost to the speed at which the processor operates. The second part is the addition of more shader pipelines. More pipelines means that the graphics card can render more screen elements simultaneously, thereby increasing the speed of rendering. Lastly, the performance of the memory has been increased both in the amount and in bandwidth. A greater amount of memory allows for a higher resolution to be used while an increased bandwidth lends itself to faster updates.

It is not all good though as there are also disadvantages to using a GTX over a GTS graphics card. The first is the increased power consumption. Increased performance is always coupled by increased power consumption. Not only is this bad for your power bill, it also means that you may have to get a pricier power supply that can handle the added load. With added power comes added heat, which GTX cards need to dissipate via bigger heatsinks and more powerful fans. This makes GTX cards heavier and often bigger or longer than GTS cards. GTX card users need to know beforehand if the case they have is able to accommodate the bulk of their card as some GTX cards may not fit in some cases. And let’s not forget the biggest disadvantage to GTX graphics cards, its significantly higher cost.

Summary:

1.GTX is meant for enthusiasts while GTS is for typical gaming and multimedia use
2.GTX provides superior processor performance to GTS
3.GTX has more shader pipelines than GTS
4.GTX has more and faster memory than GTS
5.GTX cards typically have bigger heatsinks than GTS cards
6.GTX cards are often bigger than GTS cards
7.GTX costs significantly more than GTS
