Difference Between Android and Smartphones

Android vs Smartphones

When it comes to cellular phones, there are many buzzwords being used to indicate or promote products. The two common terms we hear are smartphones and Android phones. So how do they differ from each other? Well smartphones are a classification of phones that have advanced capabilities beyond the call and messaging features that we’ve come to expect. On the other hand, Android is not a specific type of phone but an operating system that is used mainly in smartphones.

Smartphones have been around for quite some time already and its feature set has greatly expanded from the simple set of contacts list, calendar, planner, and a few more to photo capture, video recording, navigation, internet browsing, email handling, and even running productivity and entertainment applications. All of the big phone manufacturers have their own smartphone offerings but prior to Android, most companies had their own proprietary OS on their phones.

As Android is just one of the many operating systems, you can therefore say that not all smartphones have the Android operating system. It is safe to say though that all phones that are running the Android OS are smartphones and not regular feature phones. The Android OS is also used for in more than just smartphones. It has also been predominantly used in tablets like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, and even in some laptop designs.

The evolution and adoption of Android since the initial release of the first commercial phone running it in 2008 has been nothing less than furious. In the span of roughly three years, it has undergone 5 major versions and has exploded to take the lead as the fastest selling smartphone OS. It has also spurred other companies like Microsoft, Blackberry, and Nokia to pursue a newer design to their respective operating systems.

If you are choosing between an Android phone and other smartphones, you can rest assured that you would not be missing out on any features when going for an Android phone. Just keep in mind that the huge variety in Android phones means that there is an almost endless array to choose from. You should look closely at individual specs and make sure that it has the latest version of Android or that it can be upgraded.

Summary:

1.Android is an operating system while smartphones is a phone classification
2.All phones running android are smartphones but not all smartphones are running Android
