Dressing vs Stuffing
Every American has, at least once in his life, heard people discussing about the differences between stuffing and dressing. The discussion mostly arises at the time of Thanksgiving dinner. Is the turkey stuffed or dressed?
The difference is not only in the methods involved and ingredients but also in the region you are from. In Southern parts of America, dressing and stuffing are used for the same thing. It’s a dialect thing. Originally, the stuffing inside the bird was cooked before being stuffed. And once carved, the delicious stuffing spilled out onto the plate, which looked like dressing. In Northern parts of America, stuffing and dressing are considered different from each other.
The difference between stuffing and dressing is in the preparation .The stuffing is a mixture of ingredients stuffed inside the cavity of the bird, as we all know. Stuffing in general involves a lot of ingredients being shoved inside a cavity; the whole cavity has to be full and stuffed before sealing. Once stuffed and sealed, the bird or any other recipe which requires stuffing is cooked. Dressing, on the other hand, involves cooking the ingredients in a pan over the stove top or in the oven and then poured out onto the plate.
The stuffing, generally, is cooked inside the body of the object stuffed, and dressing is first cooked and then poured over the main meal.
Stuffing is usually made of cornbread and is dryer than a dressing. Dressing usually has more of a pouring consistency and has added ingredients in it like onions and vegetables. It has more texture and looks beautiful in its presentation.
Dressing is not only used in baked or roasted food. It is used over salads also. Stuffed recipes are baked or roasted, deep fried, or steamed. The main reason behind cooking at high temperatures for a longer time is to cook the stuffing inside. For example, in Chinese food, the dumplings are stuffed first and then steamed. In Indian recipes, many kinds of stuffed breads (parathas, naan) are made which are either cooked with oil on a skillet or oven.
Summary:
1.Stuffing is cooked inside the body of the object stuffed; whereas, dressing is first cooked in a pan and then poured over the food.
2.Stuffed foods are usually cooked at high temperatures for a longer time. They are baked or roasted or deep-fried whereas dressing is cooked over the stove top or oven for a lesser period of time. It can be a mixture of uncooked ingredients also, like salad dressings, which are prepared by olive oil and lemon and honey, etc. which don’t need to be cooked.
3.Stuffing is usually dryer than dressing; dressing has more of a sauce-like consistency so that it can be poured over the food. It has added ingredients in it like onions and vegetables and looks prettier in presentation.
4.Stuffing is a mixture of ingredients, stuffed inside the cavity of a bird or stuffed inside a bread or dumpling; dressing is not stuffed inside anything, they are always prepared and served separately or poured over the food.

Wow, that’s not what I call stuffing/dressing.
My stuffing is made of bread crumbs, onion and celery sautéed with butter first, and turkey broth. I bake it in a pan, but we serve it separately; we do not ‘pour’ it over anything. The stuffing can be moist or on the crispier side.
Baking it separately allows the cook to put the FROZEN turkey straight into our electric roaster and bake. Takes less time than thawing it out a few days before Thanksgiving.
