Difference Between Sugar and Honey
Sugar vs Honey
Honey and sugar are sweeteners which contains fructose and glucose. Honey is a natural product whereas sugar is man-made. Honey is golden in colour and in liquid form. On the other hand, sugar is white and is seen in grain form. Both sugar and honey can be interchanged in culinary uses, but they are really different.
Honey is sometimes used as an alternative to sugar. Unlike sugar, honey retains all its properties as it is not processed. During the making of sugar, it loses vitamins, protein, enzymes, nitrogen elements, and organic acids.
As said earlier, both sugar and honey contain fructose and glucose. Honey is considered good for the health as it comes in a 1:1 ratio of glucose and fructose. Honey is also good in the sense that it contains low calories when compared to that of sugar. When a tablespoon of sugar contains 64 calories, a tablespoon of honey contains 46 calories.
It is also known that honey helps in keeping the blood sugar levels in a good range. Sugar, however, is known to cause a sudden increase in blood sugar. This shows that sugar is not good for the body and so honey is a substitute.
As honey is naturally sweeter than sugar, it can be a real substitute. Honey also comes with a lower glycemic index which means that it is absorbed and infused at a slower rate than sugar.
Sugar comes with a high glycemic index which can increase the blood-glucose levels. This can lead to overeating. This is why honey is preferred by persons who want to lose weight.
