Difference Between Ocean and Gulf
Ocean vs Gulf
Ocean and gulf are large water bodies. Gulf is only part of the Ocean. As ocean and gulf are large water bodies with almost the same characteristics, one can hardly find much difference between the two.
When comparing the two, Ocean is a large water body that has no specific boundaries. On the other hand, Gulf is also a large water body that is surrounded by land on three sides. This is one of the main differences that one can see between gulf and ocean.
Unlike Ocean, gulf is a landlocked sea. It is a landlocked water body that opens through a straight. When comparing the vastness, the oceans have a wider reach than gulfs. Oceans cover almost three fourths of the earth’s surface.
It can also be seen that the water in the gulf is calmer when compared to ocean. This is because gulf is surrounded by land on three parts. The waves in the gulf could be smaller in comparison to the waves in the ocean. It can also be seen that the oceans can be at times rough.
One can also come across difference in the ocean and gulf depths. The oceans are deeper than gulfs. The oceans have an average depth of about 13,000 feet and the maximum depth can reach above 35,000 feet.
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic are the four oceans. But there are many gulfs such as Gulf of Mexico and the Persian Gulf. When comparing the flora and fauna, there is not much difference between the two.

In your third paragraph you use the word ‘straight’. The correct word would be ‘strait’. Strait means a narrow channel joining two larger bodies of water.
The main problem is that gulf, sea, and bay are used so interchangeably that they really have no true meaning. Virtually any indentation in the shape of a continent is labeled a “gulf”, a sea is generally a landlocked saltwater lake except when it’s the Caribbean Sea or the Sargasso Sea (aka the Atlantic Ocean) or any of the seas surrounding Australia. Supposedly a bay is smaller than a gulf, except we have the enormous Hudson Bay and the little Persian Gulf. This isn’t a criticism of this article, it’s really a criticism of the sloppiness that is language.
