When installing a new operating system, users are often confronted with the choice of NTFS or NTFS Quick when formatting the drive. Usually, both options would work just as well as the other. So there is really nothing to worry about here. The biggest difference between the two is the time it would take to finish. It goes without saying the NTFS Quick would finish much faster compared to NTFS. The difference in time is even wider with drives of very large capacities.

The primary reason behind this gap in time is that NTFS Quick simply skips certain steps that are taken by NTFS since it is often not needed. Selecting NTFS would entail the removal of all files in the drive, then checking sections of the drive for damage so that those areas can be avoided by the operating system. This minimizes the possibility of data loss and file corruptions. NTFS Quick does not perform this check, which can take a major amount of time.

Because NTFS Quick skips checking the disk, the possibility exists that some damage areas would be used. For this reason, it is advisable to use NTFS for fresh drives that have not been formatted before, though it is very likely that no damaged area exist. NTFS is also advisable for older drives that have been in use for a considerable time span but has not been checked or reformatted. NTFS Quick is very much acceptable for drives that have been formatted with NTFS in the not so distant past. If you routinely perform disk checks, it is also advisable to choose NTFS Quick as the disk check would probably not see any new defects.

For those who want to finish the installation much faster but still want to retain the benefits of choosing NTFS, there is a way to achieve this. After completing the installation while choosing NTFS Quick, you can then manually perform a disk check by running the chkdsk utility that is provided by Windows. It would take some time but at least you can leave it running and not have to wait around for it to finish.
