Web 1.0 vs Web 2.0
Differentiating between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 is not a clear-cut task as there is no discrete step from one to the other that is like what you would expect from versions of software. In actuality, Web 2.0 is just a ‘jargon’ that cumulatively describes the changes in how people interact with the Web that differentiate it from the established perception of the Internet.
One of the most discriminating feature of Web 2.0 is the rate of which information changes. With Web 1.0 the information displayed on-screen is mostly static and the data is only updated once in a while. With Web 2.0, the information is very dynamic and the rate that information is updated is extremely fast. Sites like Twitter and technologies like syndication are two examples of how dynamic Web 2.0 is.
It is not only what you see that has improved in Web 2.0 but also what you can do. Part of Web 2.0 is the introduction of web applications, which are software that are not located on your own computer but is hosted in online servers. Services like Google Docs provide an office suite that does not require you to install software on your computer aside from a browser.
Another key difference between the two is in the flow of information as there is quite a rigid structure in Web 1.0 where webmasters determine put up information on their sites, which are then viewed or downloaded by end users. In this structure, all control over content is with the webmaster. In Web 2.0, control over content is shifted towards the user. This can be easily shown with the advent of social sites like Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, and many more. These sites provide a blank slate to their users that they can configure to their liking and upload their own content for other users to see. Blogging is also one major factor as it made the task of broadcasting online much easier for the masses. Software like Wodpress let the user build a simple site with a given structure and they can post whatever they like.
